07:13 - Lapu-Lapu

Lapu-Lapu
Posted by: juned.
Lapu-Lapu. Filipino hero: was victorious over Ferdinand Magellan during the battle of Mactan in 1521. During the course of the battle Magellan was killed and his fleet retreated to continue its journey to Spain. Sebastian Del Cano took became leader of the expedition. The monument itself is now gone a victim of politics.

some cebuanos told me that lapu lapu was a myth. that magellan was killed from a mutiny and then transfer blame to a local native.
which is not contrary to logic knowing that these spaniards were technologically superiour to the natives. (except for that vietnam as a shining example that even though their ill equipped they were able to resist america) but how often does this happen ..

I think one historian pointed out that Magellan and his party landed during low tide. Thus preventing the cannons of his boat to aid him.
The Romans also lost a whole legion to the Germans led by Arminicus in the Tautenberg Forest. History is replete with Superpowers being defeated by guerilla tactics.

Actually the statue is back. And its in bronze. Not good news to me though. I hate that statue. Its too big and it steals the thunder away from the real hero at the park, Jose Rizal. Lapu lapu would be given justice if it was moved to someplace else more in proportion to its size and someplace more in context. Like Cebu.

Yes. It would have been better in Cebu. The stattue is a victim of politics ie Gordon vs the NHI? It would have been better elsewhere.
